Citalopram or Celexa belongs to the family of antidepressants will
be better tolerated than tri-cyclic, but will be less effective.
Anti-cholinergic effects are dry mouth and urinary retention,
peripheral effects include increased blood pressure and peripheral
serotonergic effects include nausea and vomiting. The SSRIs are at
the centre of some controversy. If Citalopram is suddenly
discontinued then there is a possibility that a sudden and severe
re-emergence of psychotic features may appear. Especially if the
discontinuation was sudden rather than slowly tapered off. The
number of side effects caused by Citalopram are many some of which
arefatigue, (hyperhidrosis), head aching , heart problems, vomiting,
female and male sexual diseases. In 1% of cases certain alergies and
mood swings have also been noted. Sedation may be felt during the
treatment of the drug therefore it is advised to take the drug
during night time.
A rare side effect of Celexa is teeth gritting also known medically
as Bruxism. The initial stage of use of Celexa may include the
experience similar to shocks, electric shocks in the upper body and
hands. These are caused by chemical changes occurring in the brain
and subside with time. There are times with pain attacks and
suicidal thoughts or perhaps self harm in the first few weeks of use
before the drug actually starts working. Sexual side effects have
also been noted in some patients, both male and female. Usually they
are reversible but they may last for months and is called Post SSRI
Sexual Dysfunction.
